What Is Wilmington College Career Services?
The Wilmington College Career Services department is an asset here on campus, dedicated to helping students with their internships. They also provide students and alumni with the tools and resources needed to help navigate their first steps in life after graduation. At Wilmington College, students are pushed to find their own internships and other employment-based opportunities. Career Services frequently posts online about positions available outside of the campus’ sphere and basic connections so students can experience hands-on learning for themselves. Career Services partners with the faculty, staff, and students to develop and promote internship opportunities, providing the necessary information and expectations for each position according to the company supporting the internship.
Career Services’ main goal is to encourage students to pursue activities that help them take the next step in their career path. Career Services help students decide if they should go on to higher education or help them find jobs that suit their skillsets, securing employment for them after graduation. They guide students within their internships and help students build the proper portfolio needed in the modern career field. Career Services offers students the help needed to be ready to apply and look for opportunities during or after their time on campus as a student, through career readiness. Career readiness is a measure of a students’ career documents and the preparation needed to enter the professional world.
What Tools Can Students Utilize?
The Career Services department has partnered with apps like V-Mock to help accelerate and differentiate resumes, curriculum vitae (CV), cover letters, and other career-based documents. This app also provides students with tools to teach and practice their interview skills. The department also offers a connection and premium account for Handshake, where companies post their job openings and availability online for students and others around the Clinton County area.
Handshake offers the unique ability to connect to businesses hiring near you with a direct route of communication to the employer. Handshake helps connect local employers with local students, building and growing a community based-connection, a tradition engrained in Wilmington College's legacy. Handshake’s algorithm is built to show users jobs tailored to their location, degrees or expected degrees, and other personal preferences set within the application. Handshake no longer holds the on-campus jobs for Wilmington College; these are now posted directly to the Wilmington College app.
Wilmington College’s most versatile tool is Coursera, a tool providing students with industry-based credentials in the form of completing online courses for digital certifications. Coursera is a unique tool Wilmington college offers its students to help further their career portfolio. Coursera offers free courses that can be used to obtain industry-based credits from the top institutions and organizations, adding more experiences on cover letters and resumes. Students can access their Coursera, handshake and their V-mock accounts by visiting the career services hub on the Wilmington College website.
The big three: V-mock, Handshake, and Coursera, on Wilmington College’s Career Services department’s webpage, all work together to help prepare a student for life after graduation. Coursera helps diversify and fill a resume. V-mock builds professional documents and provides practices for real-world application. Handshake provides a local and national hub of job opportunities tailored to fit your specific degree. These outlets support students by providing them with the opportunity to build a resume with a hub of career tools, an employer-based application program, and an application providing students with the proper industry credentials to differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition.
This team devotes itself to connecting what students are learning in the classroom to the work and experiences they have off campus. Career Services builds upon the expectation of service and civic engagement through the promotion of service opportunities. Career Services is a foundational step in students connecting with employers, graduate schools, and nonprofits. Career Services is the hub of internships on campus, providing not only the physical lists of internships both on and off campus, but also works to regularly create new connections across the Clinton County area.
The Career Services department also offers students the ability to experience mock interviews, career-based job postings, and meetings with professionals in their future field. Mock interviews take the place of a preliminary-practice to meeting and participating in in-person interviews. Practicing in-person helps students gain the experience they need to succeed in conducting themselves in real, professional interviews and settings.
Career-based job postings are opportunities that come through the Career Services office. These job postings usually pertain to a couple of degrees and are posted to the Career Services social media pages and shared through Outlook. Meetings with career-based professionals are one-on-one or group-based interviews in which students are able to converse in-person with someone in a position that they hope to be in one day. This meeting can also give students exposure to someone who has studied within their degree and who can further explain the route the professional took to get to where they are in their career field.
