Gift ideas on a college budget

Finding the perfect gift is difficult.

Finding the perfect gift within a college student’s budget—well that can be practically impossible.

“I want to give someone a gift that is good, but at the same time I have to look at my finances,” said Wilmington College junior Zach Schecter.

But there are a number of unique gift options that are also budget-friendly.

The local thrift store can be a great place to start when looking for gifts for people, as it can feature a large variety of low-priced, often gently-used items.

“It’s an experience. It’s kind of like, what’s one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” said Shawna Donaldson, another student at Wilmington who says she regularly shops at thrift stores.

Another way to save money while on a budget is to shop for supplies at craft stores and make a gift yourself. Making the gift yourself may take more time, however, it can feel more personal for the receiver when they get a hand-made gift.

“They’re more sentimental,” said Donaldson. “I actually have gifts to make this semester for people. It saves money as well.”

It can be difficult for college students as they prepare for the holidays. Giving gifts can be expensive when you have a small budget. However, it’s not impossible to get the perfect gift for the special people in your life. You just have to get creative.
